According to NHS data, from 20 to 25% of women and 10% to 15% of men in the United Kingdom have varicose veins.

Varicose veins are swollen and dilated veins with a dark blue or purple colour, usually appearing on the legs and feet.

For some, it is just an aesthetic nuisance, but for many, the main symptoms are:

– sore, heavy and uncomfortable legs
– swollen feet and ankles
– muscle cramps in the legs, especially at night.

If the varicose veins are not treated, they can develop into a venous ulcer in more severe cases.

Symptoms usually worsen at warmer temperatures, or if the person remains standing or sitting for an extended period.

Why do varicose veins occur?

Arteries are responsible for carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body, and the veins help to do the opposite, returning blood to the core.

Doing so, the veins in the legs must work against gravity. However, the veins have valves that prevent reflux, causing blood to flow in a single direction.

But, if valves develop impaired function, reflux occurs, and therefore the accumulation of blood and dilation of the veins.

That’s why varicose veins usually occur on the legs and feet because blood returning to the heart has farther to travel.

Causes

The highest incidence of varicose veins is observed in women.

Family history, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and birth control pills are risk factors for developing the condition.

Prevention & Treatment

If you have identified yourself with some characteristics and symptoms, do not worry, as it is possible to treat and prevent them by changing only a few small habits in everyday life.

According to health specialists, it’s not possible to completely prevent varicose veins.

However, you can improve your health by wearing compression garments like stockings, socks and leggings that will provide the right compression on your legs and feet while you’re standing, sitting still or exercising.

The stockings help to relieve the symptoms of varicose veins and improve blood circulation

Providing consistent pressure in the legs, pumping blood back to the heart.

Try to choose the ones that provide extra squeeze near the ankles and feet.

Besides wearing compression stockings, you should:

– exercise regularly

– watch your weight

– eat more high-fibre

– follow a low-salt diet

– avoid high heels

– elevate your legs

– try to change your sitting or standing position regularly.
